Understanding Contax’s

point of view.

Contax Automation deals with varied clients, with massive production facilities that sometimes require special features to enhance production or tweak a production process to improve the quality of the end product or add an additional layer of features to the product.

As per a survey, toys is a $90 billion industry that uses 40 tons of plastic for every $1 million in revenues and is the most plastic-intensive industry in the world.

In 2019, a renowned toy maker (Contax Automation's client) decided to cut down on plastic use in toy packaging to reduce its plastic footprint. In 2020, Contax Automation approached Virtual Employee to conceptualize and design a tabbing machine through SPM for its client.

A little

about SPM.

Special Purpose Machines, commonly known as SPM machines, are mostly unavailable off the shelf. Unlike other machines, these don’t fall into the category of standard manufacturing programs. These machines are specially designed and tailored as per one’s specific demand. SPMs are also known as bespoke machines and specially designed machines.

The Special Purpose Machine design project for Contax Automation is unique as it involves a lot of research and brainstorming to zero upon a bespoke solution for the requirement.

Nitin Pandey Senior Design Engineer

Nitin stepped into the picture after Contax requested a professional experienced in machine engineering.

Nitin has single-handedly improved the concept generation process which makes taking approval from the customers a relatively easy process. He has more than 8 years of experience in CAD, drafting, DFM, PDM, PLM, conceptual designing, R&D, reverse engineering, and project planning.

SolidWorks is widely used in the engineering and design industry for creating 3D designs and models. The program allows for precise and accurate modeling and simulation of design ideas.

Some of the key benefits of using SolidWorks include improved design accuracy, faster time to market, reduced errors and rework, and increased collaboration and communication between team members.

Step 1 of 3 Defining
the problem.

The first step in designing a special purpose machine is to define the problem it needs to solve and create a rough sketch as a solution. Rough sketches function as the first full visual prototype and help understand the basics without delving deep into the matter.

Step 2 of 3 Brainstorming ideas.

At this step, we brainstormed creative and innovative ideas for the machine's function that prioritize efficiency, safety, and environmental impact. We considered the latest technology and materials available for the machine's components and structure.

Step 3 of 3 Creating a
detailed design.

During this phase, a detailed design of the machine is developed using SolidWorks. The design is based on the specifications that were identified in the previous steps and includes the machine's blueprint and parts list.

Compiling the

Final design.

Nitin has single-handedly completed more than 40 projects with Contax Automation. The Tabbing Machine designed by him will help Contax's client cut down on plastic packaging by 99% as it replaces shrink wrapping with small plastic tabs. The machine will dispense small plastic tabs that will help secure the product from all sides.

Nitin completed the design process in under 1 month so that Contax Automation can start with the final production.

After the design got approved, the 4-part machine was manufactured by Contax Automation and integrated by the toy manufacturer in its production process.

“Nitin is a valuable employee, excelling in design contributions and facilitating quick model changes.”
